Building a 6-Figure Film and Video Studio From Scratch
In 2011, my wife was pregnant with our first son, Max. At the time, I was working as a real estate agent and real estate developer. It had been 12 years since I graduated from film school and wasn’t doing much with my film degree and more importantly my passion.
With a son on the way, I got to thinking about what kind of example do I want to be for my son? Do I want to be someone who tells his son, I had a dream once but I wish would’ve or could’ve done something? Or did I want to be someone who tells my son, at least I tried?
At that moment, I decided to be a better example to my son. To be the man I am supposed to be. I hit “checkout” on the Canon 5D Mark ii that was sitting in my Amazon shopping cart for a few months.
It was FAR from perfect. My son passed away at birth and I actually lost my job with the real state company. I had no clients and no other income. But I was determined to honor my son’s memory.
I started in my living room and my first client was a friend who I charged $50 for some minor editing work. Within 1 year I had my own studio space with a part-time admin and 2 full time shooters/editors. We even won an award for our work.
Within 2 years I had built the studio into a six figure business. And now I have lots of freedom of time and creativity.
